Hopeful

I have looked in my local area and find it difficult to get specific, free or low-cost support for sugar addiction, binge eating, diabetes, and eating disorders. There just isn't much to be found except 12-step meetings, which I don't think applies in all circumstances, and esp not for me. I have been through years of counseling and gone through that info over and over, over time. I found this site and was just excited to find a place to go and support and get support, share info, etc. I hope everyone can get the support and help they need to manage their lives. I think it will be soooo helpful for me!!

I'm sorry, I know you meant well, boycevr, but I don't use fat burning supplements, etc. I only eat as nutritiously as I can, and use regular exercise. I am managing my binge eating fairly well most of the time, and getting better all the time, but still appreciate any support I can have to just stay in line. My biggest binge problem is sugar foods, which we are trying to NOT keep in the house!

Hi PMR, I agree with you, using any kind of chemical or products to lose weight is not a healthy choice. I also went to a 12 step meeting regarding food and that definitely is NOT for me either. So, it sounds like U + I have a lot in common. Let's work on this together in a healthy realistic way. Here's my history...I am 50+ years old, I started dieting when I was 18 (even though now I look back at photos and I was super thin) I tried every diet there was, including many times on and off on the counting points and calories, etc. After much research and reading several books and articles, I have finally figured out that the constant mental concern about what to eat, not to eat, how many points or calories, measuring food, constant thinking about food that is involved in any kind of diet, that is what made me obsessed to begin with. I do not diet anymore. I also don't believe in using any religion to fix anything either. I have found what works best for me is to eat whatever I want, and just remind myself this is the appropriate portion, eat it and be done thinking or feeling guilty about it. The 12 step program was far to religious for me, I do NOT think this is a 'disease'. I think it is a mental relationship and habit that has been formed with food. I do not have this problem with any other form of substance or any other addiction. Also stopping before you take a bite and ask "is this physical hunger or is this something else that is bothering me that i am numbing the feelings out with food?" I too lean toward sugar and desserts as the problem when I do binge. I stlll binge on occasion but no where near what I used to do when I was on a diet and would take one bite of forbidden food, I felt like I blew it so I may as well continue bingeing. OR, I would eat mega amounts of food for a week before the date I picked to start a certain diet. Now if I really want dessert I make sure it's something real good, not just anything. And I eat one piece , maybe 2 or 3 , but I have stopped eating a whole cake or a whole bag of cookies. What do you think? Does this make any sense or help to you?

RavenRaven, you sound so much like me. I am in counseling for bingeing and previous exercise bulemia, and see a nutritionist to help with my eating behaviors. I think I am actually in pretty good shape overall, considering where I started! Still having some difficulty with portion control and trying really hard to just stay away from sugar things. I think I have almost no control with that. My problems started at about age 2 and I just didn't recognize it until I was around 50. They just didn't talk about eating disorders back then. Like any other addiction, it progressively got worse, until I could no longer maintain a suitable weight. But think it can only get better. Lots of hope, and yes, I thought your post helped a lot. Thanks! Sorry it took so long to get back. My nutritionist suggested another site and I was so confused. Think I will just stay here, it is more comfortable right now for me.

Sounds like u are on the right track. I have recently been reading 2 books that have helped a LOT. You can order them at Amazon. One is called
"It's Not About Food" the other one is called "Healthy at Any Size". If you can't find them, let me know and I will send you the authors names, etc. Good to hear from you. Have a good day and keep up the good work.
